Monday, November 7 [Kanene—Kyungu]

After dinner with the Sarahs we set out for Kyungu on bicycles (by choice) with a native guide on foot. We rode very fast and he ran all the way so he could catch up to us at each fork in the path. We followed native paths all the way and had a grand time going over some real wild country. Ray spilled all our water out of the bottle that was on the back of his bike [going over bumps] and we nearly dried up before we got to Kyungu. We crossed three swamps where Gaston carried our bikes. We tiptoed across two of them and managed to keep fairly dry. But one was so long and deep that Ray took his shoes and socks off, rolled his pants up over his knees, and sat me on his shoulders. We started out all right but I got laughing and very nearly fell off a couple of times. Ray’s legs sunk in almost to the hip in some places and my extra weight made each step an awful pull out of the mud. I had visions of falling on my face in all the muck.

Later we crossed a beautiful plain, the most scenic we have seen. In one village where we had to wait for Gaston we got our monkey out. These people are so far from any civilization that they went wilder than ever. Then Ray jumped over me and they shouted until we left.

Mr. Hartzler, who came by car, had the camp in good order. We set the tent up inside the hut because there are so many holes in the roof, and such large ones. We would have prefred to have it outside but we hear the rain and wind in this section are terrific and the tent wouldn’t stay up more than five minutes. We went down to the lake for a bath, being stopped three times on the way and told (mostly sign language) that it was just full of crocs. Having never seen one real close up we went and took our baths anyhow. They say the crocs are treacherous and sneak up on you under the water so they will be sure of a good meal. But we used nearly a whole cake of soap and didn’t see a one.

Had a swell supper and read a little while before going to bed. I am reading ‘The Exile’ and am glad we didn’t go to China, at least not this first time. Ray is reading a new life of Stanley that sounds marvelous, so I get it next.

Tuesday, November 8 [Kyungu]

The chief here is so old and decrepit that he isn’t any help in getting the people to work with us. We managed to get some groups together though and shoot quite a few scenes. The sun shone all day but there were no clouds at all for our long shots. We have to leave all of them until we have a real beautiful day.
